VACUUM HOSE INSTALLATION - 1.7L 914 (1972-73)
There is variation between the air filter set up for the “early” vs “late” 1.7 engine. The easiest way to identify which you have is to check for the head ventilation ports. If your 1.7 has these, you have the E heads that are made for this application.
Both cars have the charcoal canister in the front of the car. The hose diagram is identical up until the hoses enter the engine compartment.
Tools & Hoses Required:
- Hose cutter pliers or cable cutters
- Need list of hoses and descriptions. I.E. Hose 9.0 x 2.5. This means the hose ID and wall thickness. So this hose is 9mm ID and14mm OD. OD is not critical as they do not use clamps.
The front trunk hoses are comprised of:
- Expansion tank to filler neck
- Expansion tank to charcoal canister
- Charcoal canister to plastic hose (to cooling fan housing) to #5
- Back (single nipple) of charcoal canister to plastic (to air cleaner housing) connects to #6
- Plastic hose from #3 (to cooling fan housing) connects to #7 has angled fender grommet
- Plastic hose from #4 (to air cleaner housing) connects to #8 has angled fender
- Corner wheel well cloth hose from #5 plastic to plastic long hose #9 Passes through 1st grommet in front of long.
- Corner wheel well cloth hose from #6 plastic hose to plastic hose #10 Passes through 1st grommet in front of long.
- Plastic hose that attaches to #7 passes through 2 other grommets before entering engine compartment with angled fender grommet Attaches to hose # 12 to cooling fan housing.
- Plastic hose that attaches to #8 passes through 2 other grommets before entering engine compartment with angled fender grommet Attaches to hose
